Rendering: Everything Under the Sun on DelmarTo understand the scale of the sculpture on site we built a prototype and used it as a base for a series of calibration images.
Sunset Rendering We hope the sculpture becomes a place of gathering and enjoyment.
Sketch:
Moving around the SunThe project maps the city based on the orientations of its streets to the sunset over the course of the year. These drawings helped understand the movement of Earth relative to the sun. Because of the distance of the Earth from the sun, about 92 million miles, the rays of the sun are parallel when they reach us.
PrototypeA 1:1 wood prototype of the tines used as a study for scale, shadows, and construction feasabilities.
Soft Sketch
This sketch contextualizes the sculpture and begins to explore how the long shadow invites users to gather.
Color StudyA close-up of a tine is used to experiment with the color of the sculpture against the blue sky.
Components
1:1 Wood PrototypeA portion of the sculpture at a 1:1 scale presents the vertical proportions, shadow lengths, and spatial relationships.
1:1 Wood Rendering A quick study of the 1:1 wood mock up in its entirety.
Animation: Spring Sunset
As the sun sets, the sculpture moves in rhythm with the changing light. Its face catches the fading glow, tracing the day’s slow descent into evening.
Sunset at 3300 Delmar
On April 18 and August 24, the stretch of Delmar Boulevard from Grand to North 9th Street aligns with the sunset. This image shows the sun setting behind grand Center on April 18, 2025.
Once we identified a site, we developed a series of GIFs that would show the life of the place. This let us imagine the ways people would enjoy the site in all seasons.
Sunset on April 18, 2025 As the sun set on April 18th, the apperance of the city changed - buildings merged, shadows became long, the clouds above me wer half in shadow, lit from the west.
