Sunset Rendering

We hope the sculpture becomes a place of gathering and enjoyment.

Moving around the Sun

The project maps the city based on the orientations of its streets to the sunset over the course of the year. These drawings helped understand the movement of Earth relative to the sun. Because of the distance of the Earth from the sun, about 92 million miles, the rays of the sun are parallel when they reach us.

Prototype

A 1:1 wood prototype of the tines used as a study for scale, shadows, and construction feasabilities.

Soft Sketch

This sketch contextualizes the sculpture and begins to explore how the long shadow invites users to gather.

Color Study

A close-up of a tine is used to experiment with the color of the sculpture against the blue sky.

1:1 Wood Prototype

A portion of the sculpture at a 1:1 scale presents the vertical proportions, shadow lengths, and spatial relationships.

A quick study of the 1:1 wood mock up in its entirety.

Animation: Spring Sunset

As the sun sets, the sculpture moves in rhythm with the changing light. Its face catches the fading glow, tracing the day’s slow descent into evening.
